Loud booming cars cruising down your block in defiance of local laws, rattling car alarms and waking you up at two in the morning. Local police try to crack down when they can but unfortunately they only cover main through ways. These car owners with stereos that cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars use smaller streets for entertainment. As they cruise down your block they turn up there speakers and see how many car alarms they can turn on.
Neighborhood watch groups and block clubs have a hard time pinpointing these cars for police to file a complaint and unfortunately become lax in trying to curb the nuisance.
Now individuals and groups are finding it easier to catch these booming loud cars using a camera system that can not only see them but pinpoint which car is producing the loud noise as well as read their license plates. The system can connect to any smartphone (with the password). Here in Chicago, some block clubs or individuals are using the system and supplying their connection to the local police or CAPS coordinator, allowing them to not only see but hear the violators from the camera system on their mobile phones.
The system is called Boom Catcher and is intended to see, hear and record violators of local volume ordinances. The Boom Catcher configuration depends on the customers need. One version uses just one 3 megapixel camera with a built in mic. It allows you to view a wide area and zoom in on license plates and windshield vibrations. An analog version consist of at least two enclosed cameras with built in mics, one to pick up the make and model of the car, the other for license plates and depending on light conditions, the face of the driver. Pan, Tilt, Zoom cameras are sometimes used (and can be controlled by a smartphone) in certain cases. A special software is used to pinpoint the car that is causing the low base vibrations.
